Games I enjoyed most in 2008… that weren’t WoW
January 13th, 2009Okay. Wrath is a given. There’s no denying that, I’m afraid.
However, I did actually get to play a few other games in between my Friday night marathon WoW sessions that I really enjoyed this year, so here they are, kinda in order:
- Fallout 3 - vast, engaging and utterly beautiful. A real treat if you can get passed the otherwise depressing setting. It made me feel like Michael J Fox tagging along with James Woods in the Hard Way, as everyone around me was in their own kind of hell, while I was having a blast.
- Fable 2 - beautiful, light-hearted and very British, this is much less unforgiving than Fallout but no less engaging. Lush visuals and funny characters abound and the dog companion is great.
- Too Human - a fun dungeon romp, this would have been great if the original 4-player cooperative play had been left in, the 2-player coop, while fun, wasn’t really enough to get me to play more than one sitting. I may go back to this if Big Stew ropes me in to finish it.
- Dawn of War - Soulstorm - just never played it. Bought it in the states and it never even got onto my hard drive. With Dawn of War II coming in a couple of months, this may never make the cut.
- Gears of War II - can’t wait to play this. The first game was the reason both I and Big Stew got 360s (and the first thing we did with them was play this ALL WEEKEND LONG). I have a virginal, shrink-wrapped copy next to my 360, waiting for my partner in crime to get his (DAMN) copy.
- Wii Fit - this really is a fun way to get the whole family doing at least some exercise. My wife and I have a quite aggressive bit of competition going with planks, yoga and running combined with ski-jumps, bubble races and penguin suited fish grabbing games.
- Wii Sport - is still fun. Maria’s folks have got a Wii and doing a bit of bowling to wake ourselves up after sunday lunch has become a bit of a ritual.
- Mario and Sonic at the races - makes my arms BLEED. Loads of fun.
I haven’t included mobile stuff because this would go on forever, but it’s been a bumper crop last year. Let’s hope that this year holds as much gaming fun, eh?
